(More customer reviews)After having previously purchased and used an Ahab #12 spinning reel, the Ahab #8 was acquired a short time ago ( three weeks ). It too is rock solid, substantial, and as well made as its bigger brothers. Only time will tell if it will last as long as its predecessor, but judging from the materials used and lineage, there should be no problems there. Also, the design has slightly changed from the Ahabs of 1999, and for the better. It is now more ergonomic, fitting the hand better and allowing a bit more leverage with the handle, due to the length of the latter and a softer material being used as compared to the original wooden knob.
Overall, I envision only positives with this reel, and may well purchase another # 12.
P.S. (6 July 2010 ) This reel, formerly manufactured in the U.S. but now made in China, is a least the equal to its predecessors. Another #12 AND another #8 have been purchased by me, and other lesser - read not as well made - brands of reels have been retired. Have also contacted the new owners for spare parts ( spools ) and they have been nothing less than great, with friendly and prompt service. Unfortunatly, this brand has been discontinued and may not live out this year. Truly a shame, but nothing lasts forever.
