(More customer reviews)I just picked up one of these after trying R version and I have to say it is a very nice reel!It compares well to reels 3x the price that I have tried and it is very light so works well with ultra-light setups.I have it loaded with 10-lbs test proline (the round braided stuff that is the size of 2-lbs test mono).Even casing into the wind with a lighter bait this worked very well for me with no snags.
It seems to be a very forgiving setup for people new to spinner casting as my nephew had no trouble with it after switching to it from a Zebco.The rear drag setting knob is very handy and I prefer it over the front drag setting versions especially when you are trying to set the drag on the fly.I'd say it is hard to beat for the price at least initially.I have only had this for a week and used it for about 6 hours so far.

The best reel under $35 you can find (excluding other Shimano models under $35, which just get better and better for every additional dollar you spend).
Smooth (relatively, it only costs $13), flawless performance, tough.
I have a lot of these (1000s, 2500s and 4000s) that are over 15 years old, and were subject to very heavy saltwater use, and they still work fine.I have caught literally hundreds of Mangrove snapper, Snook to 25 lbs, Tarpon to 30 lbs on this model, and they always come through.For kids or beginners, you cannot find a better starting reel.
I use them as "assembly line" rods on an intercoastal dock I fish on.I put 6 or 8 of them in rod holders, baited with live shrimp, and wait for the action.(I'd say the average reel I own has spent over 100 hours in a rod holder, getting hit constantly by stingrays, snappers, snook and other game fish, and tackle busting Sail cats).
My 1000, with 6lb test line, out fought a 15 pound Jack Crevalle (who was getting chased the entire fight by a 6 foot Lemon shark and a 6 foot Hammerhead shark so you know the jack was swimming at full speed :)) during a 60 minute fight on the flats in the Keys.
Buy one and you will be happy!BTW, I never use the trigger bail thingy, but it seems to work fine.

(More customer reviews)This reel is smaller than I thought. It is best used on small lakes and or rivers for trout or smaller fish. The drag in the back works fine but is the cheapest part of the real (plastic). The reel work really well however, though it does not hold a ton of line, but enough to launch a bobber out there. The handle has a screw on the reverse side the allows it to be collapsed when loosed- for travel... I found that after about 50 casts this hand tightened screw can loose a few twist- Overall a great little inexpensive reel, for beginner to modest-Caught more than a few 10-12 inchers on this guy, and it will last more than just this season- Highly recommended for the price if you application is for the under 20" -type of fish- it has an overall smooth and quite action to it
